Functional Capacity Assessment
A comprehensive occupational therapy assessment can evaluate clients functional performance in everyday activities, identify their needs for support, and provide recommendations for reasonable and necessary supports, services, equipment, and home modifications to enhance their safety and independence at home.
Assistive Technology (Equipment) Prescription
Occupational therapists can assess and prescribe assistive technologies or daily adaptive equipment to improve clients’ functional capacity, enhance their independence in activities of daily living, and ensure their safety at home.
Examples include scooters, wheelchairs, lift chairs, mobility aids, bathroom equipment, hospital beds, hoists and lifers, pressure care products and etc.
Minor and Complex Home Modification
Occupational therapists can prescribe home modifications to enhance accessibility of the house, improve clients’ safety and reduce falls risks, and increase their participation and independence in everyday activities.
Examples include grab rails, handrails, shower hob removal, ramps, kitchen modification, designing wheelchair accessible bathrooms and etc
Life Skills Training
Occupational Therapy interventions to assist clients develop everyday living skills such as budgeting and money handling, meal preparation, accessing the community and using public transport, choosing appropriate clothing and dressing.
Housing and Care Needs Assessments
Occupational therapists can make recommendations on clients’ need for appropriate housing and/or care services base on the outcome of the functional capacity assessment.
Occupational therapists can provide supporting documents to assist clients apply for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), Supported Independent Living (SIL), and public housing etc.
